Big Style for Small Spaces: Essential Tips for Urban Living

Big Style for Small Spaces: Essential Tips for Urban Living

Most are living in urban areas where living spaces are the equivalent of a shoe box, very compact. You may often feel limited with the type of furniture you can use to style your space according to your taste, but… who says small spaces can’t be stylish? Let’s use a bit of creativity, and of course the correct furniture, so you have the right tools to transform even the smallest apartment into a chic and functional little sanctuary.

  1. Invest and get yourself multi-functional furniture pieces for your space. For example, think sleeper couch, extendable dining tables or even ottomans with hidden storage compartments, the list goes on… Not only do these furniture pieces save you space, but they are also multi-functional and versatile.
  1. Vertical all the way! When you have very limited floor space, all you have to do is look up! Try using vertical storage pieces like tall bookshelves, plants hanging from your ceiling and racks that you can mount to your walls to help you make use of every centimetre of your apartment. Plus, it also draws your eyes upwards, creating an illusion of a much taller room.
  1. Bright light, big city. Using shades of lighter colour schemes makes a room feel so much more open and bigger. Try to opt for more of a neutral pallet, or if you really love your colour, go for pastels and accessorise it with a few pops of bold accessories to keep things a bit interesting. Another way to create the illusion of a more spacious room are mirrors, they should be your best friend; they reflect light and (your awesome outfit of the day) make the space feel larger than it is.
  1. Decluttering and Organisation are in fashion. Remember when cooking with your mom or grandmother, they would always say “less is more”. This is also relevant for when you are living in a smaller space. Declutter your home and only hold on to what you truly need, for example: making use of baskets, bins and organisers for your drawers helps to keep everything in its place. When your home is well organised, your space will automatically feel more comfortable, spacious and serene.
  1. Having flexible layouts. Don’t be afraid to rearrange your furniture to find the most efficient layout. Sometimes, a simple move can open more space and improve the flow of your home, or create a whole new atmosphere, as if you just moved into a new apartment.
  1. Ultimate smart storage solutions. Use every nook and cranny for storage where possible. Whether it be under-bed storage, over-the-door racks, and built-in cupboards, it can help you stash away items without sacrificing valuable floor or shelf space.
  1. Outdoor spaces also count. If you have balcony space or even a small outdoor area, make the most of it. Try to create a cozy little nook with compact outdoor furniture and add some greenery or colourful flowers. It is a great way to extend your living space and enjoy the fresh air every now and then.

So, when your home is small and compact, don’t feel like you must compromise on your style or comfort. Hopefully with some of these tips, you can create a home that is not only functional, but beautiful as well. You spend most of your time in your home, so why not create a personal sanctuary, no matter the size?
